MIT Reality Hackathon January 2024

Real Access VR offers an immersive exploration into the fusion of real-time accessibility and virtuality within exhibition design. Inspired by the groundbreaking work of Joe Davis, a distinguished professor in MIT's Department of Physics and a pioneer in the intersection of biology and art, this experience showcases the potential of accessible design through four innovative tools.
  1. High Contrast: The option for High Contrast is crucial for improving visibility and legibility, particularly for users with visual impairments. By providing a high-contrast mode, Real Access VR ensures that all users can engage with the content effectively, enhancing the inclusivity of the experience.
  2. Magnification: The Magnification tool is essential for users who require a closer look at intricate details. This feature empowers individuals with visual impairments or those who benefit from enlarged text and images to fully appreciate the nuances of the exhibition. It fosters a sense of independence and engagement by enabling users to explore the artwork in depth.
  3. Sonic Exploration: Sound plays a vital role in immersive experiences, and Sonic Exploration opens up new dimensions for accessibility. Users with visual impairments can navigate the virtual space through auditory cues, creating a rich and engaging environment. Additionally, audio descriptions and guided narratives enhance the understanding and enjoyment of the exhibition for all participants.
  4. AI Discussion with the Artist's Avatar: The opportunity for AI-powered discussions with Joe Davis's avatar adds a personal touch to the experience. With as simple as pressing a button, this feature not only allows users to engage with the artist's ideas and perspectives but also provides a platform for interactive learning. Through conversations with the avatar, users can delve deeper into the artwork, its inspirations, and the artist's intentions, fostering a deeper connection and understanding.

By integrating these four tools, Real Access VR goes beyond traditional exhibition design to prioritize inclusivity and accessibility. It acknowledges the diverse needs of its users and strives to create an environment where everyone can fully participate and appreciate the work of Joe Davis.
